I'm often asked what I recommend to make reading in English easier. And invariably I answer: ¨Practice, practice, practice¨. Everything comes with time and you have to learn to enjoy the process. Surely, you have to choose what you like reading. You would never try reading Ulysses in your native language? Don't try it in English. You secretly love good crime story? Start with that! You are afraid that reading James Ellroy might be too difficult? Try with something easier: Agatha Christie has nice stories, you can try Richard Castle novels if you like the series, or look for some Young Adult/Teenage story (they tend to have easier vocabulary).

A menudo me preguntan que recomendaría yo para hacer la lectura en inglés más facil. Y siempre contesto: ¨practicar, practicar y practicar¨. Todo viene con el tiempo y hay que aprender a disfrutar del proceso. Seguramente, hay que elegir lo que nos gusta leer. ¿Nunca intentarías leer el Ulises en tu lengua materna? Pues no lo intentes en inglés. ¿En secreto te gustan las historias de crimen? ¡Empieza con eso! Tienes miedo de que la lectura de James Ellroy podría ser demasiado difícil? Prueba con algo más sencillo: Agatha Christie tiene historias agradables, puedes probar novelas sobre Richard Castle, si te gusta la serie, o busca algún libro para adolescentes (tienden a tener un vocabulario más fácil).

All these sounds easy enough, but what if you want to read something more ambitious? There are many leveled reading books, rewritten for the specific levels. I have to confess, I'm not a fan of those. I avoid recommending them and I believe it's better to start with something easier, but not written for students. The leveled books often have the story so simplified, that it literary hurts me to see them. Although, for sure some or better than others.

Todo esto suena bastante fácil, pero ¿que hacer si quieres leer algo más ambicioso? Hay muchos libros de lectura por niveles, reescritos para los niveles específicos. Tengo que confesar que no soy una fan de ellos. Evito recomendarlos y creo que es mejor empezar con algo fácil, pero que no esté escrito para estudiantes. Los libros de nivel tienen a menudo la historia muy simplificada, y literalmente duele ver eso. Aunque, sin duda alguna, las hay mejores y peores.

Because of all the above, I was quite enthusiastic when at the end of June I was contacted by a nice lady from Palabrero Press. She wrote me an email presenting the bilingual editions they have (English-Spanish) with the original text somehow modernized. These are not leveled readings, but the 3 titles published up to now, could be approximately estimated as upper-intermediate (Xingu and Other Stories by Edith Wharton), intermediate (Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson) and elementary (The Card by Arnold Bennett). The nice lady has even sent me Edith Wharton's book to see if I could use it with our Donostia Book Club. And you know what? I can and I will!

Dicho eso, me entusiasmé bastante cuando a finales de junio fui contactada por una agradable mujer de Palabrero Press. Me escribió un correo electrónico con presentación de las ediciones bilingües que tienen (inglés-español) con el texto original de alguna manera modernizado. Estas no son lecturas niveladas, pero los 3 títulos publicados hasta ahora podrían estimarse aproximadamente como intermedio alto (Xingu y otras historias de Edith Wharton), intermedio (Winesburg, Ohio de Sherwood Anderson) y primaria (El as de Arnold Bennett ). La mujer agradable (¡gracias!) incluso me ha enviado el libro de Edith Wharton para ver si podía usarlo con nuestro Donostia Book Club. ¿Y sabeis qué? ¡Puedo y lo haré!

I had some doubts about the modernized part, so I've decided to compare the original and new version. The changes are quite subtle and very accurate, without too much interference and maintaining the original meaning. I was impressed by the work of translator, Laura Salas Rodriguez.

How does the bilingual version work? On the left side there is an English, slightly modernized text. On the right side we have the Spanish translation.

Tenía alguna duda sobre la parte modernizada, así que he decidido comparar la versión original y la nueva. Los cambios son muy sutiles y precisos, sin demasiada interferencia y manteniendo el significado original. Estoy impresionada por el trabajo de la traductora, Laura Rodríguez Salas.

¿Cómo funciona la versión bilingüe? En el lado izquierdo hay un texto inglés, ligeramente modernizado. En el lado derecho tenemos la traducción al español.

You can read just one of the versions and consult the other, just when in doubt. Or you can read both and enjoy and compare the translation.

There are five excellent stories included in the book: Xingu, The Choice, The Other Two, The Eyes and The House of the Dead Hand. My absolute favorite is Xingu. I loved the irony of it.

In 2017, one of our monthly meetings will be dedicated to Xingu and other stories by Edith Wharton. As usually, the review will be posted just after the meeting, so you have to be patient.
